Named after Puerto Rican poet, educator and pianist Consuelo Lee Corretjer (1904-1988), the Centro Infantil is a bilingual child care program for children ages 2 and 1/2 to 5 years.

The Centro Infantil was begun in 1980 in response to the need for bilingual-bicultural pre-school programs in the community. It places special emphasis on Puerto Rican and Latin American culture. The program is designed to help ease the child's transition to elementary school and provides services primarily to working families. View pictures of the CIC's pupils for the past 20 years here.

At the Centro Infantil, the primary objective is to assist in the development of the child's basic skills and academic preparation as well as provide the child with an understanding of  Puerto Rican and Latin American culture. This includes language, music, customs, food, and an appreciation of their home land.  We believe children should be creative, free and capable of making independent decisions.

At our center, the child will develop an understanding of the world around us and the role played by each human being. This is a way to expand the child's individualistic view of the world. We emphasize social development and strive to foster cooperation and respect between children and adults. We stress the importance of the group and focus on the development of problem-solving skills.  Our program develops intellectual skills through the application of an educational program geared to each child's developmental level. In order to achieve our objectives, we require that all families support the academic and social efforts of our staff,  and we aspire to keep our children and their families aware of their history, social reality and the potential of our  community. We also ask that every family help in the learning process of the Spanish language

Self-discipline and self-actualization are encouraged in the program's curriculum. Parents participate in the entire process of program development. The Center's staff is in a constant dialogue with parents and attempts to raise consciousness about all aspects of child development. Special emphasis is placed on a child's rights as a human being, as an individual, and as part of a community.
