On Wednesday November 19th, BACCA coordinator Maria Borrero and youth leaders Michelle Guzmán and Mia Espinosa participated in the Latino Cultural Center’s Zona Abierta event which featured the theme” Suspended Lives: Immigrant Families in Detention Centers”UIC students, staff and the BACCA program were able to see how everyday immigrant mothers and children fleeing poverty and violence are criminalized and detained in jail-like detention centers. The discussion was led by Jennifer Chan, Associate Director of Policy at the Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center.
